This Old House....

...just ain't what she used to be! This is the home where I grew up in. My parents got a modular and placed it in the field next to it and the old place has really fell apart in the last few years. There is still stuff in there we are slowly getting out but the going is shakey, the floors are falling in,the ceiling coming down, etc. The old girl has got to be torn down this year. I am sad about that, but she is too unsafe to leave standing. It almost seems my childhood is being wiped out,the hospital where I was born has been razed,my old high school torn down and now my childhood home is next on the list. When I get rich and famous there will be no place to preserve in honor of me! I guess they will just have to restore the house I currently live in with a plaque out in front...."Papa Lived Here!"

  1. That's a shame, Papa. Have they considered keeping part of the fireplace/chimney? You could convert it to an outdoor barbeque and keep a small piece of your family history. Just lop the top off of it (and I realize I say that like it is as simple as opening an envelope when it would probably be quite difficult).

  2. You are thinking along the same lines I am Christopher! I've been trying to think up a way to save the bricks from the old chimney/fireplace to build flower boxes, planters, edging or something out of it. Depends on who actually tears the old place down and if they will slow up and let me salvage the bricks! One of the main problems is that it appears that the chimney leans INTO the house and will probably fall inside when the frist wall comes down. I'm gonna try tho!

  4. Oh Papa, I can relate to this. Seeing the places and symbols of one's childhood being demolished is painful. My sympathies are with you. I like the idea of saving the bricks, perhaps some beams that are still in good condition?

  5. That's sad, Papa. Just look on the bright side: the house is coming down due to the fact that it's no longer inhabitable--not to make room for a new Wal-Mart!

The buffet restaurant Q and I worked at was razed a few years ago to make way for a CVS drug store. I have no attachment to the buffet place, God knows. Their food sucked, and I got acne just from looking at the greasy fried chicken. It's just kind of sad that the place where we met is no longer there.
